Veneers, Whitening or Bonding — What Your Smile Actually Needs
Three very different treatments are often asked for interchangeably. Here is what each one can and cannot fix.
Whitening: colour only
Professional whitening lightens natural tooth structure. It does nothing to shape, chips, gaps or alignment, and it does not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or fillings.
If your teeth are well-aligned and healthy but dull or stained, whitening alone is usually the most conservative answer.
Composite bonding: small shape corrections
Tooth-coloured composite is sculpted directly onto the tooth to close a small gap, repair a chip or lengthen a short tooth. It is done in one visit and is reversible, but it stains more over time and needs occasional polishing or repair.
Ceramic veneers: shape, colour and symmetry together
Veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of the teeth. They are the right choice when several teeth need shape, proportion and colour changed at once, or when discolouration is intrinsic and will not respond to whitening.
Because a small amount of enamel is usually reduced, veneers are planned with a digital mock-up and trial smile first.
A common, sensible sequence
Treat any decay and gum inflammation, align the teeth if needed, whiten to the target shade, then finish with bonding or veneers matched to that shade. Doing it in this order avoids mismatched restorations.
