Life After a Dental Implant: The First Year
What to eat, when swelling settles, which cleaning tools to buy and the review schedule that protects your implant long term.
The first 72 hours
Mild swelling peaks around day two and settles by day four. Use cold compresses on the first day, keep your head slightly elevated while sleeping, and take the prescribed medication on schedule rather than waiting for discomfort.
Do not rinse vigorously or use a straw for the first 24 hours, and avoid smoking entirely — it is the single strongest risk factor for early implant failure.
Eating through the healing phase
Cool, soft foods for the first three days; soft-chew foods for two weeks; then gradually return to a normal diet while keeping hard nuts and chewy meat away from the surgical side until your dentist clears it.
Cleaning around an implant
From the second week, clean the site with a soft brush and the interdental brush size your dentist recommends. A water flosser is a useful addition, especially around full-arch bridges.
Reviews and warning signs
Expect a review at one week, at integration (3–6 months), after crown fitting, and then six-monthly. Contact the clinic sooner if you notice increasing pain after day four, persistent bad taste, pus, or any movement of the implant.
