Crowns vs Veneers: Which Do You Actually Need?
Crowns cover the whole tooth, veneers cover the front. When each is right, and how to avoid unnecessary over-treatment.
Choose veneers when...
The tooth is structurally healthy and you only want to change its front-facing appearance (colour, shape, small chips or gaps). Veneers are conservative — only 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel reshaped.
Choose crowns when...
The tooth has had root canal treatment, has a large old filling, is cracked, or needs structural strengthening. Crowns cover the entire tooth, giving 360° protection.
The over-treatment trap
Some clinics quote crowns where veneers would work. If your tooth is essentially healthy and the goal is only aesthetic, ask specifically about veneer options before agreeing to crowns.
