Types of complete dentures
Conventional (made after gums heal from extractions), immediate (fitted the same day teeth are removed), and implant-supported ('overdentures') that snap onto 2–4 implants for dramatically better retention.
The fitting process
Impressions, bite registration, wax trial (you approve tooth shape/colour), delivery, then 1–2 adjustment visits over 2 weeks.
Adjustment period (first month)
Mild sore spots are normal — easily adjusted. Speech and chewing normalise in 2–3 weeks.
Care
Remove at night. Clean daily with denture brush and cleanser (never toothpaste — too abrasive). Relining every 3–5 years as jaw ridge shape changes.
When to upgrade to implants
Recurrent looseness, sore spots that won't resolve, or difficulty chewing hard foods — 2–4 implants transform a lower complete denture into a secure, non-slipping overdenture.
